Under Section 28 of the Criminal Law Act 1826 the Judges of the Crown Courts (that is High Court and Circuit Judges and Recorders) may order the High Sheriff of the County in which a criminal offence has been committed to pay to a person who in the opinion of the Court has been active in the apprehension of anyone charged with such offence such sum of money as the Court shall consider reasonable and sufficient.
