Over the past few weeks I have given out Court Awards to the most outstanding and brave individuals who have, in each of their own way, brought a perpetrator to face justice and receive a significant custodial sentence. It is an absolute privilege to thank them on behalf of the senior judiciary.

Today I was invited by the Sikh community to the Gurdwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha and community centre @sccycwatersideconnect to give out awards to their children and young people and talk to them about the importance of youth service and volunteering. I shared a meal and cut the celebratory cake. The Sikh Community Centre & Youth Centre (SSCYC) is an innovative community hub with a Food Bank helping over 250 families currently, a health, wellbeing and fitness club, a Sikh museum educating visitors, young and old, about the Sikh faith, a business & enterprise centre and a punjabi fusion catering enterprise with all profits going back into the community towards social impact projects. No wonder SCCYC received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2020. Met up with Jem Hough from #ActiveLink earlier this summer to discuss the fantastic work this Northamptonshire based charity do. Active Link supports young vulnerable people of secondary school age disengaged from education by providing a safe space with trusted trauma informed mentors. Physical and well being programmes are provided both in and out of school. Looking on their website
www.activelink.org.uk I can see they have supported over 70 young people, 176 hours of mentoring, 52 half term visits and 245 1-2-1 phone calls.

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Kurshida Mirz

The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Kurshida Mirza BEM, held a beautiful multi-faith Justice Service at The Tree Cathedral in Milton Keynes today. Instead of holding her service in a traditional building of worship, Church, Mosque or Temple, she held it at The Tree Cathedral. Made of trunks, bark and leaves and designed in 1986, it is based on the outline of Norwich Cathedral. Joined by six other High Sheriffs, we enjoyed a moving and unique celebration. Peace, Justice and Love for Humanity.

A real pleasure this afternoon to open the Exhibition for Northants & Rutland Open Studios held at and sponsored by #lamporthall The wonderful Katie Boyce, Director & Festival Organiser of #northantsrutlandos and her team have worked solidly since Tuesday to place, display or hang over 540 artworks. An important event in Northamptonshire’s cultural calendar, celebrating the depth of talent and creativity of our local artists. Open Wed-Sun, 10am- 4pm at Lamport Hall. You can also go and visit the artists in their studios throughout the month of September.

Magistrates are people drawn from their local comm

Magistrates are people drawn from their local communities and volunteer their time to sit in adult, family & youth courts. They deal with over 95% of all criminal cases in England & Wales and are a key part of the judicial system. Lady Chief Justice Dame Sue Carr has said, “The rule of law is a fundamental constitutional principle which underpins an open, fair and peaceful society, where citizens and businesses can prosper. Our judges and magistrates are its cornerstone”.
Magistrates who are part of the Magistrates in the Community (MIC) initiative of the Magistrates Association, go into primary and secondary schools and educate children of the consequences of a criminal record. In Northamptonshire a team of dedicated magistrates visited over 40 schools in the last academic year and delivered over 75 presentations, which means around 2,250 pupils will have participated in the mock trials and been involved in the MIC programme. Again this is done by magistrates in their own time and as volunteers on top of their court commitments.

Met a remarkable group of individuals and organisations who are all committed to The Wellingborough People Project Partnership. Inspired by the late David Laing CBE, former Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire and led by Jane Deamer from the Crysalys Foundation, everyone is there making a difference to the communities of Queensway, Kingsway and Hemmingwell. One of the projects discussed was the Whole Health Football programme in Queensway.

The Cube Disability is now the largest independent

The Cube Disability is now the largest independent care provider for adults with learning disabilities and autism. “We see the ability, not the disability”. They are also home to Northamptonshire’s first dedicated dance school for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and their siblings. #thecubedisability have evolved to run CubeKids working with partner #nayc On my visit to NAYC last week I met TomStevenson along with @pauljoyce1510 Mayor of Northampton, and John Whittaker from NAYC in the new forestry section and outdoor play area/SEN garden at the Benham Sports Centre, Northampton. Monday-Thursday, each day 40 children can immerse themselves in the wonders of nature in a safe, enclosed area with wonderful sensory experiences. Delighted to attend The 139th Blakesley & District

Delighted to attend The 139th Blakesley & District Agricultural Show. Established in 1884, the show is organised by local volunteers from the farming and country community. A thoroughly rural and traditional event. Hosted by Show Chairman Chris Raven and his wife Jane, I met Nikki Blackwell, Business Partner & Senior Insurance Agent for NFU Mutual West Northants and Sarah Bool the newly elected MP for South Northamptonshire (and Kaleb Cooper of Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm fame!) As well as the main arena attractions, livestock displays, tractors & machinery there was a brilliant British Food & Farming Area too. Tasted 4 delicious Northamptonshire cheeses and sipped a local award winning English sparkling wine grown here in Blisworth. We have many local & rural businesses here in the County to be proud of. Chatted to the Northamptonshire Police Rural Crime Team and heard how their team of 8 officers visit the farming community and businesses to ensure organised crime gangs don’t target and ruin livelihoods. Picked up a great Rural Crime Prevention Pack full of best crime prevention advice and significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime.

On Thursday I went to see a young group of people

On Thursday I went to see a young group of people off to the Hebrides with #NAYC #NorthamptonshireAssociationofYouthClubs Joined by #MayorofNorthampton @Paul Joyce we heard how the 11 young people going have had to raise monies towards the trip and how they have all gone above and beyond their targets. They are taking part in a self discovery 2 week expedition to the Outer Hebrides to build their leadership skills. Each one of them has already completed the Emerging Leaders training with NAYC and will now use those skills to support young people in an environment completely different to their normal groups. Good luck and well done to you all! Thank you to those adults who are accompanying them and helping to make this all possible 🙏 NAYC and ACUK (Action Centres UK) is an amazing charity committed to releasing potential in young people. It has been around since 1961 and has been providing help and education through leisure-time activities for children and young people and providing the facilities for training leaders. Today I presented a Court Award to a very brave individual, Jack Hawkins, who showed “great courage and meritorious service in connection with the apprehension and conviction of a criminal”. Under Section 28 of the Criminal Law Act of 1826, an Order of the Crown Court was made and I had the great pleasure and privilege of presenting the Award and citation. #thankyou #bravery #inspirational

Dropped by #northamptonschoolforboys to meet up with @andrearissol @jamalbrownbill @timfava founders of #athleticeliteuk running a week of basketball for those starting out on their journey, budding talent and the top elite students going on to great things in the basketball world both at home and abroad. Andre, Jamal and Tim are wonderful and inspiring individuals who want to give back to the community and share their international and professional lives in basketball with young people. Their mission statement says it all “We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to develop their physical, mental & emotional skills through sports, and we are committed to making this a reality for as many children as possible”. Many of those coaching are doing this because they want to give back too. Thank you 🙏

I attended a wonderful event last night to celebrate Northamptonshire Police’s Long Service and Good Conduct officers, special constables and support staff. The Lord Lieutenant, James Saunders Watson alongside the Acting Chief Constable, Ivan Balhatchet presented the Awards. The Police Long Service and Gold Conduct Medal was instituted under royal warrant by King George VI in 1951, who said, “The highest of distinctions is the service of others”. I certainly witnessed that with those who received medals or awards at the ceremony #northamptonpolice #northamptonshirelord-lieutenant #servicetoothers #congratulations

A couple of Fridays ago I visited @northamptonguar

A couple of Fridays ago I visited @northamptonguardians2021 in their SNOvan outside @allsaintsnorthampton (Safer Nights Out van for those of us who don’t know!) Run entirely by volunteers and keeping people safe during the night-time economy they turn out every week on a Friday & Saturday night between 10pm-5am. Already this year there have been 256 logged incidents with a 50/50 female/male ratio. #NorthamptonGuardians also go out to schools and colleges to present on how to keep safe on a night out. I went to thank a doorman at one of the night clubs in Northampton who acted very quickly alongside Northampton CCTV control and the Northampton Guardians to protect a vulnerable female who had got into a car after a stranger had approached her. Luckily because of the quick actions of everyone and the Northamptonshire Police all ended well. Fantastic collaboration 👏👏👏Heroes all round 😊 Thank you Gill and all the volunteers who make Northampton a safer place #northamptonguardians #heroes #volunteers #staysafe

Visited a great national charity #HopeUK with a base in #Kettering this week, along with Craig Skinner #MayorofKettering
They have reached over 27,000 children nationally this year. Through the #JuniorCitizenshipScheme this charity educates Yr6 students about #healthyeating #peerpressure #drugsandalcohol #internetsafety #fireandwatersafety

Supported by nine High Sheriffs, the Youth Courts Symposium was held at the University of Northampton today. A morning of presentations about child-centred approaches to reducing youth offending in Northamptonshire and then a keynote speech from @Jess Mullen from the #AllianceforYouthJustice Delegates from the Youth Justice Board, Magistrates Association, Magistrates Leadership Executive and many other key stakeholders in the youth criminal justice system were present. We want to upscale an incredibly effective model and help young children across the country.
