A huge thank you to the organisers of the Kettering Armed Forces Parade on 8th June 2025 for putting together such a fantastic event. It was a privilege to witness the dedication, discipline, and pride shown by all those who took part.

Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment, and the Corps of Drums from the 1st and 2nd Battalions, joined forces with 1000 Cadets to march through the streets of Kettering. Well-wishers lined the streets to welcome the guard of honour and colour party of the 3rd Battalion.

Events like this remind us of the vital role our Armed Forces play in our communities and provide a brilliant opportunity to come together in recognition of the sacrifices made and also in celebration.

Last week, I had the honour of joining the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton celebrations on Oak Apple Day, the day associated with the restoration of the Monarchy.

The retired Bishop of London, Lord Chartres gave a wonderful sermon which captured a sense of how the restoration of the town proved a defining moment in the county’s history following the civil war. Largely funded by generous gifts from King Charles II, the restoration began to heal the wounds of a divided society after the devastation and divisions caused by the Civil War which had ended just 15 short years before. Readings were given by Edward Conant and Rachel McGrath. Pikemen and Musketeers added a striking sense of pageantry and historical authenticity to the commemoration.
In accordance with tradition, a garland of Oak branches was hung around the statue of King Charles II on the roof of All Saints Church by the Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Jane Birch.

It was a powerful reminder of Northamptonshire’s enduring strength and unity in the face of adversity.

It was a real pleasure to attend the launch of the new 10 year partnership between the Northamptonshire Children’s Trust and the Shaw Trust. I had the opportunity to discuss with various commissioning managers, case workers and personal assistants the importance of long term strategic planning for children in care. Too many vulnerable children are moved from home to home annually giving them no opportunity to build relationships and have something that every child deserves - a stable home.

There were some powerful testimonies given by young people of how NCT and the Shaw Trust have turned their lives around for the better. It is clear from talking to the children how much they love the homes they are in at present. Some of these children have huge potential. They just need the right support and mentoring.

Oh- and I nearly forgot to mention the wonderful cake baking competition between the various houses run by the trust. Congratulations to all the houses who participated.

On Friday, we completed the final leg of our fundraising trek in sunny Daventry. This completed our 40k county wide challenge, raising vital funds for the High Sheriff’s Initiative Fund, managed by Northamptonshire Community Foundation.

A huge thank you to Clir Katie Thurston, Mayor of Daventry, for seeing us off at Holy Cross Church, and to
@northamptonshirewalks for curating such a stunning route across Daventry Country Park, Borough Hill, and beyond including the last standing BBC radio mast and other hidden gems of local heritage.

To all the charities, public representatives, and friends who have walked with us this month: thank you! What a privilege it has been to meet you all and learn about the fantastic work you are all doing for our community. There is so much positive work going on to celebrate.

The walks have been a joy and inspiration. So much so, I have decided to extend the series and will be doing some more in the autumn.

3 years ago, the Knife Angel visited Northampton and Corby as part of a larger campaign to raise awareness about knife crime. Last night, I attended a service at All Saints with Hassan Shah DL to remember that event. We heard incredibly moving speeches including from Rohan Shand Snr who’s 13 year old son was murdered on the Harborough Road in Northampton. Two young ambassadors spoke, one describing not being able to step outside the front door without worrying for their personal safety.

Father Oliver Coss gave a moving and poignant sermon and Quinton from MMAP Workshops delivered some thought provoking and beautiful spoken poetry - https://lnkd.in/ephUNkEx.

The message of the night from Quinton - we can’t simply meet once per year and do nothing in the interim…. It was a call to action.

What a beautiful county town we have!
It was a treat to walk around Delapre Park and Northampton town centre yesterday in the company of so many inspiring people. We’ve now reached the 30k mark on our 40k trek across #Northamptonshire. The walk was expertly led by @northamptonshirewalks in the company of many great local charities.
We were honoured to be seen off at the stunning @delapreabbey by the new Mayor of Northampton, ClIr Jane Birch, before trekking a route via key town landmarks including the Museum and Guildhall plus canalways and green trails.
Lots of wildlife spotting with beautiful #dragonflies and #waterwayswildlife
Along the way, we continued to support and connect with brilliant local charities and were especially moved by witnessing the work of OWN MERIT, helping prison leavers take their next steps towards a positive future.

Every mile we walk raises essential funds for the
#NorthamptonshireHighSheriffsFund, managed by @northantscf with all donations matched by the Foundation to double the impact for local grassroots projects.

On Thursday evening I had the great honour of participating in the Beacon lighting ceremony in Corby to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. We were treated to a wonderful display by the Corby Royal Air Force Cadets accompanied by Scott Morton on the bagpipes.
It is heartening that so many of us in our communities remember VE Day 80 years later. It is most important that we continue to thank our veterans and those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Thank you also to the team at @thegreenpatchkettering for the allotment tour and chat about their fantastic work hosting volunteer days, children’s clubs, education sessions and family events.

I had the pleasure of attending the Northamptonshire Police long service awards this week. Speaking with the recipients was very humbling. It is clear that we owe a great debt of gratitude to those who are called to serve.
In Northamptonshire we are blessed with a successful professional force, with a great culture inspired by a strong leadership team.
Pictured here is Deputy Chief Constable Ash Tuckley receiving his long service award from the Lord Lieutenant and Chief Constable Ivan Balhatchet. We owe so much to all of these inspirational, hard working men and women who often put themselves at risk for the public’s safety.

I was honoured this week to attend the official celebration at Northampton General Hospital of the purchase of new advanced equipment to be used for focal therapy treatment of prostate cancer. Very informative presentations were given by Chandran Tanabalan and Alistair Gray who are experts in this field. Focal therapy is a highly targeted treatment which has significantly improved results in terms of reduced side effects.
Congratulations to Maurice Thompson and James Saunders-Watson who, together with all at Northamptonshire Health Charitable Fund spearheaded the fundraising for this project.

Because this is my final one before Jeremy's Declaration tomorrow on 2nd April. The High Sheriff role has been in existence for over a thousand years and is the oldest secular appointment by the monarch. Each HS brings their own style, experiences and skills to the position and they give their time freely and without incurring any expense to the public purse. High Sheriffs are connectors of people, charities and organisations across our counties. Thank you to my Northamptonshire predecessors for their good work and all the very best to Jeremy as he starts his year in office. A poignant tribute and parade by Northamptonshire

A poignant tribute and parade by Northamptonshire District Sea Cadets and others to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the sinking of HMS Laforey. This naval ship was adopted by Northampton as part of the 1941 ‘Warship Week’ fundraising initiative. HMS Laforey was assigned to several operations in the Mediterranean Sea, including escorting a relief convoy to Malta as part of Operation Halberd. Sadly on 30th March 1944 she was torpedoed by a U-boat where 182 men died. A wonderful day out with my fellow East Midlands High Sheriffs and their consorts before we hand onto our successors in April. We had a tour around the site at Long Clawson where Stilton and Golden Blue is made and distributed around the world. Only milk from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire & Leicestershire can be used with 31 farms now producing the milk for the yearly production of 10,000 tonnes of these delicious cheeses with PDO status.
